How to Care for Crochet Toys So They Stay Soft and Cute

Crochet toys are made of yarn, stuffing and lots of tiny stitches. With a little care they keep their shape and color for years. Here's how to keep yours looking like new.

Everyday care

  • Keep them out of strong sunlight. Bright sun on a windowsill can fade yarn colors over a few months.
  • Dust them now and then. A lint roller or a soft clothes brush lifts dust and fluff from the surface.
  • Keep them dry. Damp stuffing takes a long time to dry and can lose its shape.

Spot cleaning

  1. Mix a little mild soap or wool wash with lukewarm water.
  2. Dab the stain with a soft cloth — don't rub hard, it can fuzz the yarn.
  3. Dab again with a cloth dipped in clean water.
  4. Press out moisture with a dry towel and let the toy air-dry flat.

Should you machine wash?

We don't recommend it. Spinning can pull stitches, squash the stuffing and loosen glued or sewn-on details like eyes, cards and rings. Spot cleaning is the safest choice.

Reshaping after a squish

If a doll gets squashed in a bag, gently massage the stuffing back into place with your fingers. Ears, petals and legs can be shaped by hand.

Keychains and bag charms

Mini keychains live a busier life. Check the ring and the yarn loop from time to time, and clip them to a zipper pull rather than letting them drag on the ground.
