Your First Amigurumi: 6 Tips for Crochet Beginners

Amigurumi — small crocheted animals and characters — is one of the most satisfying ways to learn crochet. Projects are small, you finish in an evening or two, and you end up with something cute. These tips help your first one go smoothly.

1. Start with a kit

A beginner kit has matching yarn, the right hook size, eyes and stuffing, plus a tutorial for that exact design. You don't have to guess which materials work together.

2. Watch the video first, then crochet

If your kit has a video or QR-code tutorial, watch each step once before you try it. Pause often — nobody gets the magic ring right on the first try.

3. Learn three things: magic ring, single crochet, increase/decrease

Almost every amigurumi is built from these. Once they feel natural, the rest of the pattern is just counting.

4. Use a stitch marker

Amigurumi is worked in spirals, so it's easy to lose track of where a round starts. Clip a marker into the first stitch of each round and move it up as you go.

5. Don't pull too tight — or too loose

Tight stitches make the hook hard to push through; loose ones let stuffing peek out. Aim for even, snug stitches and relax your grip.

6. Stuff a little at a time

Add small pieces of stuffing as you close the shape. Firm, even stuffing gives a smooth, round finish.
